What is Biathlon?

Biathlon is a sport that combines the physically demanding sport of cross-country skiing with the intense precision of rifle marksmanship. These opposing disciplines collide at the shooting range. With hearts pounding nearly three times a second, biathletes need to control their breathing as they shoot, knowing that every shot they take will determine who stands on the podium that day. It is an amazing mix of strength, agility and precision that draws on all of an athlete's mental and physical resources. Although US Biathletes are relatively unknown in North America, they are well respected and have been producing strong results in Europe. Our Junior Team is among the strongest in the world with numerous medals at World Junior Championships and European Cup races, including the best World Junior results for an American team in 2002. These athletes have graduated into the senior ranks and include Jay Hakkinen and Tim Burke who each had a top-ten finish at World Championships in February of 2007. Biathlon competitions also take place during the summer months with Summer Biathlon races that combine rifle marksmanship and running and has a large following in the United States. World Championships are held every year along with US National Championships, a series of over twenty competitions throughout the US and our very own Summer Race Series that takes place in Jericho, VT.
